Worth our Weight

It’s no secret that America is getting bigger, not geographically speaking, but somewhere in the middle region, that’s right; our waistline! So just how extreme is the problem? An article from the CDC reports that “overall self-reported obesity prevalence in the United States was 26.7%“. What does this mean? It means that 26.7% (more than a quarter of the adult American population) population has a BMI (body mass index) of 30 or greater. (You can follow this link to calculate your own BMI.) So what’s the big deal? What does this mean for more than just the individuals impacted but society as a whole? Those who are overweight or obese may feel that their weight does not effect anyone besides themselves and those who are not overweight may think that they are  impacted at all, but what are the economic, societal and political issues that have to be addressed with a growing population?

Weigh in America, what do you think? I want to know how you think our world is impacted by obesity. If you don’t want to post a comment email it to me at cyanddarci@gmail.com and I’ll get back to you with my thoughts. Stay posted for more information!

Darci! Awesome first post, I can’t wait for more!! I feel like overweight behaviors have become part of our culture. Every technological advancement as of late has been one of convenience. Walking up the 106 steps to campus everyday I wish they’d put in an escalator. We need to somehow reverse the clocks and instill in the youth a desire to work and to play, not to get by and have things handed to you. Another thing I’ve noticed with my interactions with children is this ever-growing sense of entitlement that seems to be sweeping America off their feet and onto the couch. They feel like they’re entitled to allowance and video games when in reality, it should be an earned privilege. To sum up, let’s start with the youth. Let’s get them playing, being creative, finding joy in work and accomplishments, and teaching them healthy habits!
